Position:

Vice Prim.

Preferred portfolios: Culture, House dance and Welcoming leader.

Culture: The reputation of any community is largely influenced by its cultural achievements. That can be seen in the competitive nature which is prevalent around events such as SU Acapella (Sêr). That is why it is important for the HK of Culture to not only be a person that can perform in the various cultural activities (Such as Toneelfees, debating or SU Acapella) but being able to manage them.

In my term as HK of Culture I will ensure that in each field I find the best possible director, coach, or conductor to ensure optimal success for the various cultural groups. I also believe it is important to not only partake in official competitions, but also partake in friendly competitions between other residences. This will not only serve as a practice round before the competition, but also spark some Pieke Gees and ensure connectivity throughout the house.

The HK of Culture needs to make it their responsibility to ensure multiple opportunities to provide a platform for most artists – be it dance, debating or art – to be able to showcase their craft. This can take place at multiple events, such as a talent evening or a showcase at one of our Pieke events, such as the Pieke arts and wine.

In my term I would like to uphold and improve our positive attitude towards sêr, Toneelfees and maintain our podium positions. I would also try my best efforts to spark the debating community within Pieke.

House Dance: This is the biggest event of the year and it requires a creative person to pull off an event like this. I see myself as a person who generally thinks outside of the box and for this reason, I will be able to host a successful house dance. Seeing as I have multiple connections within the wedding industry, such as décor and entertainment, I will be able to ask them for assistance as I arrange this event. This event requires a lot of planning and careful decision making. I am a person that would go the extra mile to try and get as many donations as possible to ensure that we can maintain the same ticket price as close as possible to previous years, to make it financially possible for our members to attend.

Being on the House Dance committee for 2020, I already have a lot of great ideas going, this would only give me time to refine the plans and improve my work.

Welcoming Leader: This is a crucial time for any community, as this person determines the continuity of the growth of the community. Seeing that it has been psychologically proven that first impressions do last longer and better in comparison to other impressions, it is important to have a person that is well spoken, confident and is able to grab the attention of the room at any moment. I am that person. The welcoming leader should not only be able to arrange a constructive welcoming program to ensure that the new members are familiar with campus but is also invested within the Pieke community. This requires a good work ethic where one will go for the extra mile to ensure optimal success and be able to maintain an authentic attempt at connecting with the newcomers.

In this portfolio I would maintain these authentic moments such as, crossing the line, partaking in vensters, bonding activities on our Pieke house grounds and most importantly becoming a connected community. Seeing as I already served a term as a HK during welcoming, I already know what challenges we are going to face and would be able to prepare for them. It is important to maintain the same amount (if not more) Gees that we have, which is authentically Pieke culture to be laid back, relaxed and have a good time. In my term I would also focus on which aspects are important during a welcoming period and focus on those, to ensure a well-rounded welcoming experience.

Type of leader I am:

I see myself as an enthusiastic person. My energy is always at a high whenever I am working with people, so it comes naturally to me to truly enjoy myself whilst doing this. In my leadership position I find it important to maintain a ‘judge-free’ zone as far as I can, to ensure that those around me feels safe to speak their minds and also validated as a human being. I am the type of person that worries about the small stuff, which is also a good thing since I will not overlook them, meaning that I will be able to attend to all the needs of any situation. Generally my strong points are working with people and that helps when I am in a position where appearances and impressions are important, such as working towards gaining a donation or working with a new group of people we would like to leave an impression on.

I generally believe that it is worth going the extra mile for those around me, simply for the reason that I always find myself thinking “If I were in their shoes, I would have wanted someone to do that for me”. I am an ‘outside of the box’ kind of thinker and it allows me to approach situations and events a bit differently, always keeping it exciting since it will never be the same thing twice. This can be crucial, especially when working in a group, to allow the thinking process to start on a roll. For this reason, I also see myself flourishing working in a group, but also functioning on my own. My biggest weakness is my tendency to be too involved and not splitting the workload up, causing me to have too much on my plate. Luckily, this is possible to overcome with clear communication between group members and seeing as this is an aspect I focused on in my term as HK of 2019/2020 I have drastically improved this aspect of myself.
